I do get the daily digest. I haven’t had a lot of luck receiving but I have given away some things. I also had the extreme pleasure of meeting Freecycle founder Deron Beal a few weeks ago.
On Sunday I went to a birthday party for my friend’s daughter who was turning 1. After all the food, cake and admiration of the adorable little girl it was time to open her presents. I was quite dismayed at the fact that she received gift bag after gift bag of mass produced clothes that she will probably only have the chance to wear once or twice. It appeared that everyone got the invitation and concluded, “Let’s go to Wal-Mart” A few years ago I probably would have done the same thing (Target instead of Wal-Mart though) but because of my change in shopping philosophy I gave her a handknit dress wrapped in simple tissue paper instead and it was the only gift that got passed around for everyone to see.

Wow, Kristen – that’s commitment! But when I think about it, when I decided to avoid Big Box and major retail myself, I just stopped having that ‘covet’ feeling about mostly clothing, but also home decor.

How do you get your freecycle updates – daily digest?

I don’t really need any “stuff” for my house, in fact I’d like to declutter some. If I do need something I avoid big box stores at all possible costs. First choice is Freecycle, then thrift stores, ebay, etsy or a local shop. I thnk the only thing I’ve bought this year (not including food) at a chain type store is tampons and toilet paper.

Wow – that’s an interesting challenge, Rachel. I haven’t yet set a budget for my makeover, probably because I just don’t want to know how much it’s going to cost me.

Yay Nicole! Great idea. I can’t wait to hear about your progress.

As you know, I too lament the lack of real “design” in what I’ve done with my home. My personal challenge, which starts next month, is “1 room, 1 month, $100″. I figure if I truly focus on cleaning, clearing out, and rearranging one room a month, I can get a lot done. The $100 is mostly to cover paint and/or repair work, but could include some flea market finds if there is any leftover.

I have been shopping for furniture and accessories at flea markets, CL, etc. for years now. I too am an interior designer and totally agree with what you said about “I’m busy, stuff is expensive, I don’t want to commit…” I think making this decision is a great one. And thanks for the inspiration board. If I come across anything I will email you.
