Two thousand ten is almost a wrap and it got me thinking that I should make some resolutions for 2011.
It’s an annual tradition I have, setting resolutions then forgetting them within a week and going back to my regular behavior. However, this year will be different for me. How do I know? Because I have already begun to change my habits.
Late this year, I discovered a concept called collaborative consumption which is “where people use technology to allow them to share and pool resources and assets.” And after I watched The Story of Stuff video, I took a good look at my life and realized I was part of the problem.
My daily habits were totally mainstream, but I was oblivious to how I was contributing to a destructive cycle – so I began to change. No longer was everything a quick trip to Target or the mall to buy something brand new; when I got an urge to purchase something for myself or the apartment, I asked myself if it could be found second-hand on Craigslist, Ebay or Etsy. If I couldn’t find what I wanted (or “needed”), I would wait until I could find it in a sustainable way.
Acquiring stuff in a sustainable way isn’t the only way to practice collaborative consumption, but I look forward to 2011 because I know that it will be a fun year of learning the new ways.
Good riddance, excessive consumption and 2010.
